OSIsoft PI: The AVEVA Industrial Information Management Solution
Are you curious about how to use AVEVA OSIsoft PI to contextualize your data? In this blog post, you’ll get a brief introduction to the AVEVA OSIsoft PI system – an industrial data platform with multiple layers: Collect, Store, Contextualize, Analyze, Integrate, Visualize and Act.
OSIsoft PI system is a leading system of record for critical operations. What makes OSIsoft PI so strong is the fact that the company has been focused on building this product or platform already for the last 40+ years. The target has been on creating a market-leading data infrastructure solution for real-time data management. OSIsoft is now officially part of AVEVA, a global leader in industrial software, combining the strengths of both companies.
When it comes to implementation, Roima is in a forefront position, as we are both an AVEVA Endorsed System Integrator and OSIsoft Premier Partner – a truly unique combination in the whole world! OSIsoft PI is most used in six core industries: Oil & Gas, Power & Utilities, Metals & Mining, Pharma & Life sciences, Chemicals and Manufacturing. Roima is actively serving many OSIsoft PI customers in all these industries. Our OSIsoft PI teams located in Finland and Sweden have the experience and delivery capability to serve customers all over the world.

The PI System provides solutions from Edge to Cloud. The PI Core is the on-premises core solution that has been around already for the last 40+ years. The PI core consists of four layers: Collect, Store, Enhance and Deliver. You can choose from hundreds of ready-made and standard interfaces and connectors to get data into your PI system from almost any vendor equipment or instrument. PI Data archive is a traditional process historian database. The true power of the system comes from data contextualization provided by PI Asset Framework (AF). With PI AF, you can add a templatized asset model on top of your historian tags. PI AF also provides a powerful analysis engine to create calculations and aggregations based on your time series data, and you can further analyze the different events by using AF Event Frames. The delivery layer features multiple programmatic interfaces, PI Integrator for Business Analytics and a powerful web-based self-service dashboarding and visualization tool called PI Vision.
The most recent additions to the PI platform are the PI Edge and PI cloud capabilities. The PI Edge is a lightweight software supported even on small-footprint rugged devices, providing edge analytics and edge data store capabilities to withstand extended loss of connectivity. OSIsoft Cloud Services (OCS) is a cloud-native managed service built for elasticity and resilience, being not just a copy of the on-premises PI Core but taking advantage of the possibilities in the cloud.
What comes to the templatization and contextualization of your data with the PI system, there are certain best practices to follow. To learn more about these, please go and watch this recording of our webinar on the subject. In the webinar, we also discuss the synergies of the merger between AVEVA and OSIsoft.
